Blizzard just announced Diablo 3. For those that don’t really care about computer games, just know that this is a serious that is very popular. Of course, as with all things on the Internet. There must be multiple communication channels and different media. The usual announcements, FAQs, screenshots, videos, trailers, various game info, and of course, a community forum.
And of course, Internet anonymity provides a gray area for inappropriate behavior. The first day the site is up and the forum is live, it is bombarded with meaningless rubbish. This is what happened:
As much as we like to close our eyes to graffiti type activities, claiming that the Internet majority won’t act that way, the fact remains that every publicly used Internet space have had these things happened to them. The fact remain that it is not a matter of whether it will but when it does. This is where implementation choices are important. When creating Internet space for public use, assume it will come under attack, assume it will be hacked, assume people will misuse it by hiding behind anonymity, and most of all be ready to take responsibility of controlling it from day 1.
A line that I like very much comes from the movie “The Italian Job” (2003): “Trust everyone. Just don’t trust the devil inside them.”
